Psychiatry (Child, Adolescent and Adult)
The World Health Organization now defines health as “the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease”. This proves that the old adage, “there is no health, without mental health”, is true indeed. In fact, world statistics in 2024 have shown that 1 in every 4 persons in the world is now afflicted with some form of mental illness, with depression and anxiety being the most common among these. Good news though is that during the pandemic, the administration of SMAH foresaw such need and opened its first Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry out-patient clinic in 2021. The cost for mental health check-up was and still remains the lowest in Nepal considering that patients are seen and treated by licensed specialists in the field. Today, there are two Psychiatrists manning our out-patient clinic Sundays up to Thursdays 9:30am-4pm and Fridays 9:30am-1pm. They also manage referrals from our in-patient (wards) 24/7. As part of SMAH’s future plans, the first open-ward Psychiatric in-patient shall be established. An Out-patient aftercare/ day care center are also to be looked forward to in the near future.
