Our History
In the late 1950s, to aid the development of the country, Nepal opened its borders to international governmental and non-governmental organizations. Dr. Stanley and Mrs. Raylene Sturges, Seventh-day Adventist Christians, along with many other faith-based organizations, came to Nepal to offer their services as health care professionals. In coordination with the United Mission to Nepal, and at the directives of King Mahendra, the family moved to the village of Banepa, east of the nation’s capital, Kathmandu.
In partnership with the local community, the Sturgeses began with a small one-room clinic, caring for the immediate and urgent medical needs of the community. By 1960, they expanded into a 20-bed hospital. At that time, Scheer Memorial Hospital was the only hospital serving the half million people in the region. Mr. Clifford C. Scheer, as a memorial to his parents, Charles J. and Carolyn Scheer, donated most of the money needed to build the hospital. Funding for equipment, room furnishings, and medical supply necessities came from CARE and the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Where we are
Since those modest early years, and with thousands of hours of volunteer time and countless financial assistance from the Seventh-day Adventist Church and countless other organizations, Scheer Memorial Adventist Hospital has grown to a 150-bed facility with a full range of clinical and diagnostic services. We have a state-of-the-art clinical laboratory with modern technology and testing standards. The radiology department was recently upgraded to the newest Konica Minolta digital radiography system. Regardless of technological advances and infrastructure developments, our mission has remained unchanged: to provide compassionate, patient-centered care to communities who have trusted us for 60-years.
As an international organization, Scheer Memorial Adventist Hospital has been led by medical directors and administrators from around the world. SMAH is thankful to every leader for the invaluable leadership each has provided.
