SMAH welcomes licensed healthcare professionals from around the world to come to SMAH. We are required to submit an application for you to obtain licensure before you can work.

The model we follow at SMAH is one of skill and capacity building.  Licensed volunteer healthcare professionals need to come with an attitude of partnership.  This model focuses on mentorship and skill transfer.  Nepal has well trained physicians and surgeons who are interested in advancing their technical skills.  Many volunteers leave Nepal with new skills and knowledge.  Thereby, the mentorship circle is completed.  Afterall, we all have something to learn, don’t we?  If you are interested in this partnership model — a model that continues to build the strengths of the Nepal health system — then please complete this form and email it to jun_mdhar@yahoo.com.

Once you submit the form, we will review your submission and request the following items:

Please give SMAH 3-5 days to review your application and respond.

As a student you are welcome to spend time in any of the clinical departments listed in Services. Rotations are customized according to your desires, as well as the requirements of your training program. For those wanting exposure to many specialties, one week should be the minimum amount of time spent in any one specialty. However, based on your interests, we can break your experience into shorter lengths if you wish.

You are expected to attend the morning report (except Saturday) starting at 08:00.  Morning rounds start after the handoff.  Once rounds are done, if there is time before clinic, doctors usually take morning tea.  Clinic starts at 10:00 and continues until 13:00.  Lunch is until 14:00.  Afternoon clinic resumes and then finishes around 16:00 hrs.  You are welcome to follow the junior doctors in the evening and overnight.  On call night duty is also available for those desiring more clinical exposure. You are expected to actively participate in all the activities.

The Nepal Medical Council, Nepal Nursing Council, and the Nepal Health Professional Council requires any person delivering care to be licensed.  Consequently students or residents who rotate at the hospital are in an observership status.  You will be paired with a Nepali physician.  This is a wonderful opportunity for your education. We expect you to engage actively in your education.  The more inquisitive you are, the more you learn from your rotation.

Appropriate professional attire is required. Wearing a tie for males is optional, but a white coat and neat appearance is expected. Blue jeans are not professional attire for our medical staff. During the winter months, long underwear, sweaters, and coats are essential as heating is minimal in most areas of the hospital. During the summer rainy season, a small umbrella and rain gear are useful. You may bring your own scrubs if desired, but for those doing surgical rotations, scrubs are provided. Please bring your own white coat and stethoscope.

Laundry services are available for a small fee. Some apartments have a washing machine available for your use.
