What is the scope of endocrinology and what conditions warrant consultation from an endocrinologist?

Endocrinology is a specialized branch of medicine that deals with endocrine glands, hormones produced by them and disorders related to them. It studies endocrine system in microscopic and complex detail. Hormones are chemical messengers secreted by endocrine glands that regulate metabolism, digestion and absorption, reproductive functions and development.

Different glands like pituitary, thyroid, ovaries, testes, endocrine pancreas, etc. are components of endocrine system.

Who is an endocrinologist?

An endocrinologist is a doctor who specializes in hormonal disorders who has also specialized in internal medicine.

Diabetes, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, growth and developmental disorders in children, infertility and subfertility due to hormonal disorders, perimenopausal syndrome, osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency and metabolic bone diseases are some of the disorders that fall under the expertise of an endocrinologist.

Obesity, disorders of lipid metabolism, endocrine hypertension, metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovarian syndrome are additional disorders that require consultation from an endocrinologist.

An endocrinologist can also provide consultations for tumors of endocrine glands.
